Boisai Care Tips - Choosing the Proper Soil

April 17th, 2008

Soil selection should be of great concern to any bonsai gardener. Bonsai trees are typically confined to small containers and keeping them in the best possible soil is extremely important to the health of your bonsai.

Here are a few points to consider when selecting soil for your bonsai tree:

  • Gravel, loose sand, expanded shale, or fire clays such as catlitter are excellent choices. Japanese bonsai gardeners prefer volcanic soils because they are loose and contain minerals that are essential to a plant’s growth.
  • Optimizes water drainage. You want to have sufficient drainage while maintaining enough water to sustain the bonsai tree.
  • The soil should provide adequate aeration.

The guidelines above should provide you a general overview of the soil you should use. You should take care to research the needs of your specific bonsai tree.
