Decorating
a bathroom that is used by a child presents its own unique challenges.
Young children use the bathroom in general much more often than older
kids do, and are often accompanied by a parent. That makes a kid’s
bathroom much more used in general than those mostly used by an adult.
However, the bulk of parents have not the faintest idea where to start
in decorating a bathroom for their child. Children can be very verbal
about what they don’t like, so if you’re the parent of a young child,
you might find that your kid disagrees with your design choices. This
article will give you a few tips for decorating a child’s bathroom.
Knowing The Gender Behind The Decorations
Decorating
a bathroom begins with the gender of the child (or children) who will
use the bathroom. If your child is a boy, you can decorate the bathroom
so that specific interests are appealed to, such as cars, bugs,
cowboys, and so on. A bathroom used by a young girl can be decorated to
appeal to other passions that a boy may not be interested in such as
dolls or princesses. Of course, most of this consideration goes out the
window when children of both genders are going to be using the
bathroom. If that’s true, then the bathroom itself should be kept in a
neutral theme but still appeal to the kid’s interests. Whatever the
theme, you can accessorize in a variety of different ways.
Accessories and Decorations to Use
There
are a large number of different accessories which you can use to
decorate a child’s bathroom. If your child is into cars, you can get a
bathmat and shower curtain with cars on them – this will generally be
available as a set. Or, if your children are fans of Disney in your
house, they can have bathroom rugs with their favorite Disney characters.
Toothbrush
tumblers are another consideration, and come in literally hundreds of
styles. Boys may enjoy a tumbler shaped like a dinosaur while girls may
prefer tumblers that have a shape like a princess. Soap dispensers come
in many styles too and can also be used to enliven children’s bathrooms
with their favorite characters, animals and more.
Doorknobs, wastebaskets, soap dishes and tissue dispensers can be found which will cater to the interests of any child.
You can even decorate the knobs on the bathroom wall cabinets in your kid’s bathroom if you so choose.
You
can buy knobs that look like clown faces, jungle animals, or soccer
balls, depending upon what your children prefer. Whatever a child’s
interests, and decorations you use in the bathroom can accommodate them.
As Your Child Changes, so Does the Bathroom
As
your child gets older, of course the bathroom is not going to be
appropriate if it’s decorated in a Mickey Mouse theme, for example.
Your child’s décor and accessories will likely change right along with
their interests. From soap dispensers to bathmats, shower curtains to
doorknobs; even the tumblers can be changed to grow right along with
your child.
Take care to avoid using decorations in your child’s
bathroom that may be difficult to change. For example, wallpaper with
images of Cinderella on it may be very age-appropriate when a girl is
three, but will be entirely inappropriate during adolescence, which
means that the wallpaper will need to be replaced.
However you choose to decorate your child’s bathroom is limited only by your own imagination – there are so many options
open to you that the hardest part will be choosing which to go with.
The key to creating a bathroom that will delight your child is to know
their interests and buy decorations that are easy to change as your
child gets older. With just a little planning and imagination, as well
as a small budget, you can create and keep the perfect bathroom for
your child.
