Home Improvement Projects: Power Tool Safety

June 30th, 2008

Home improvement projects can be hazardous. Lots of these types of jobs utilize power tools that can cause injury if used incorrectly. So study these tips before you undertake that renovation, and stay safe.

* Take the time to thoroughly read the instructions for your power tools and pay attention to the recommended safety precautions.

* Before you start up a tool, make sure all the components are securely tightened and ensure that the guard is functioning.

* Don’t use your tools in wet conditions, and be sure they’re plugged into an electrical outlet that’s safely grounded. Watch out that you don’t accidentally cut the cord. Unplug your tools before putting them away.

* Don’t let your fingers near a power blade. Don’t hold pieces of wood with your hands while you’re sawing, instead clamp them in place. You’ll want to wear work gloves when you’re dealing with wood, glass, or metal materials, but be sure to remove them before picking up your power tool so you’ll be able to operate it with better control.

* Protective eyewear is a must when using any kind of power tool.

* When changing a part or blade on a tool, be sure to unplug it first. This applies to cleaning and maintenance as well.

* Learn the proper technique for supporting a board before you cut it with a power saw. You don’t want it to thrust back towards you while you’re cutting.

There’s a great sense of accomplishment in taking on home improvement projects around the house. Just remember to use your tools safely, and you’ll be in a position to enjoy your accomplishments for some time to come.
